Tilly – A Turtle’s Tale

An inspiring account of adversity, perseverance and the connection of kindred spirits

Hi I’m Jacqueline… this is the story of Tilly.

Tilly the turtle became part of the Visual Revolution family a year ago, and her story has stayed with us ever since. I first met her during an estate sale at my neighbors’ house. My husband and I had planned only to look for items to purchase but quickly learned they were also trying to find a new home for their turtle — Tilly. Tilly was a 24-year-old red-eared slider living in a large black bin with a few inches of water and a rock in the middle where she could bask. Even with people coming in and out throughout the sale, she stayed calm and steady. Our neighbors asked if we were willing to watch Tilly for a few weeks while they settled into their new home, as they needed to establish how to house Tilly in their new location. So we agreed, just to turtle-sit.

Even with people coming in and out throughout the sale, she stayed calm and steady.

We were told that Tilly had been attacked by a raccoon about seven years earlier, a traumatic event that left her missing her two front claws and part of her tail. She was able to heal from the attack, but those injuries permanently changed the way she moved through the world. Because she could no longer swim safely, she depended on shallow water, steady footing, and places where she can climb out easily. What could have made her fearful or withdrawn instead seemed to reveal how determined she was. I was immediately drawn to the way she had adapted to her limitations, learned how to move with confidence, and continued to show up with calm, steady strength.

The story of her recovery from the attack helped me understand what kind of care she would need. Tilly did not need deep water or a traditional turtle setup as much as she needed safety, patience, and an environment designed around who she had become. Although I am an animal lover, I had never owned a turtle before, but I fell in love with her pretty green eyes. So we decided to take her for one-month while the neighbors explored how they were going to house her. I was not sure if we could give her the care and environment she needed, but we were determined to try our best.

…she needed safety, patience, and an environment designed around who she had become.

I had never owned a turtle before, but I fell in love with her pretty green eyes.

For me, Tilly’s recovery became more than just her backstory; it became a reflection of what strong advertising, branding, and marketing are meant to do. Her journey shows that growth comes from understanding what has changed, adapting with purpose, and creating the right environment for confidence to return. For Visual Revolution, that same mindset drives the way we help brands evolve: if your business has changed, your message should change with it.

We brought Tilly home the next day. She was timid for the first couple of days, but by the third day she was eating and beginning to show signs of a very sassy personality. She preferred to be hand-fed, wanted out of her bin, and loved spending time on the deck. She would roam, bask in the sun, and explore, while we placed water sources nearby so she could cool off and stay hydrated. Over that month, I became deeply attached to her and was surprised by her attentiveness, curiosity, and resilience. Her transformation is a reminder that every brand deserves room to be seen clearly, understood fully, and positioned with confidence.

…by the third day she was beginning to show signs of a very sassy personality.

…they had never seen her so alert and realized she may have found the right home.

About six weeks later, our neighbors thought they had found a way to take Tilly back. I was sad because I knew we would miss her, but I also understood that this might happen. By then, she had made such an impact on us that we had already decided we would eventually get our own red-eared slider. When our neighbors came to pick her up, they noticed how much she had changed. They said they had never seen her so alert and realized she may have found the right home. They asked if we wanted to keep her, since they felt our setup was better than what they could provide. We happily said yes, and Tilly and my neighbors said their goodbyes.

As time went by, Tilly’s adventurous and curious spirit took over. She eventually grew bored with the deck and wanted to come inside, so she walked up to the glass door and knocked on it. Yes, that’s right, I said she knocked on it! If she could talk, she would have been yelling, “Let me in!” With slight hesitation, we let her explore the house while carefully blocking any unsafe areas, including the stairs. As winter approached, we moved her inside, where she entered a slight brumation period, which is like hibernation for reptiles.

She also became more affectionate in her own turtle way…

She eventually grew bored with the deck and wanted to come inside…

When warmer weather returned, Tilly became more animated and her appetite came back. She also became more affectionate in her own turtle way, coming over when she wanted back scratches, back rubs, or a gentle head pet. She now sleeps in her bin inside the house, and in the morning, she lets me know when she wants to go outside. I place her on the deck, and when she has had enough, she comes back to the door to tell us she is ready to come in.

After a few months with Tilly, we knew she was the perfect mascot for our new enterprise. Like Visual Revolution, she represents resilience, adaptation, and growth. She reminds us that change can be uncomfortable at first, but accepting something new is often what helps us become stronger and better. If your brand is ready to adapt, grow, and be seen in a stronger way, Visual Revolution is ready to help shape the message, design the presence, and build the marketing that moves it forward.
